Coalition’s Business Advisory Council on Direct Action climate change policy

May 2011

Introduction:

The Coalition opposes a carbon tax, and has an alternative climate change policy based on Direct Action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5 per cent by 2020. If the carbon tax is passed into law, the Coalition has pledged to repeal the tax if it wins government, and implement Direct Action.

The Coalition welcomes advice and input from the business community on the Direct Action policy. The Coalition is committed to ensuring that Direct Action does not place an impost on business, and that the Direct Action scheme is established in a way that maximises the opportunities for businesses, farmers and land managers to use the scheme to reduce emissions.

The Coalition will establish a Business Advisory Council on Direct Action to advise on the policy.

Membership:

The Council will be open to all business representatives.

Scope:

The Council will examine the Direct Action policy, and make suggestions about the policy. Council members are welcome to make suggestions on whether and how they would use Direct Action to reduce emissions.

Timeframe:

Information on the Council to be released publicly in May, with the first meeting to be held in June.

Meeting arrangements:

The Council would meet via telephone hook-up, and establish at the first meeting how frequently meetings would take place. The Coalition would be amenable to forming working groups for businesses from specific areas, should that be the wish of Council members. The Coalition would also be amenable to meeting business members face-to-face, or to holding one-on-one meetings, should that be the wish of some Council members.
